Landing in Calgary

Hello everyone,
While I was flying out to Calgary I was reading an issue of Vanity Fair about the situation in Africa. Millions are dying of AIDS yet there is such of feeling of hope among the people that they inspire people around the world. Some of the economies are the fastest growing in the world. Kenya sold more cell phones last year than any other country in the world. It is a very interesting edition. So, this is literally the first time I have read anything about Africa and I was facinated by the articles that I had read.
As we leave Toronto, one of the men in the waiting area was a priest and he got on our plane with us for Calgary. When we arrive in Calgary and we are walking to the luggage area we walk by a group of people who were in a relgious dress waiting by the luggage caroselle. While we are waiting for our luggage the priest arrives in the area and this group of 25 people who were in their relgious dress start singing a traditional African song. This group of people are from Etheopia and they are honouring this man that has arrived from our plane. Their singing is beautiful and the are dancing in front of him, drums included. Well, no one is looking for their luggage now...we are all fascinated by this group of people and the traditions they are teaching us. People in the airport are taking pictures and video and are dancing along with the group and clapping with them.
As I was enjoying the scene myself, I thought, would they get this reaction and involvement in every part of the world? Sadly, probably not. Canada...strong and free. Another reason why I am in love with this country. Canadian eh? Damn proud of it.
With love and thanks,
M.J.

Hi MJ and Pat...
Glad to hear you arrived safe in Calgary and enjoyed the singing and drums. You're right, Canada does embrace other cultures more readily than other countries I've visited...although the steel bands serenading passengers at many airport arrivals in the Carribean put a smile on your face and your feet automatically start tapping.
May your feet tap merrily along this weekend...
Love, Sylvia
